Abandoned carts are one of the biggest challenges e-commerce is facing. Around 80% of online shoppers abandon their shopping cart and leave the website. Let’s compare different devices: of all people who shop on their phones 81% abandon their cart; around 77% of tablet users do not complete their purchase, and 74% of people who do their shopping via computers abandon their shopping process.

Needless to say, getting those shoppers back to the site and recovering their abandoned carts has been a focal point for most e-commerce companies. One of the most well-known tactics is sending an abandoned cart email to the shopper who did not finish placing their order. However, sending an email as an abandoned cart reminder is not very effective due to the small open rate – below 20%.

Recovering carts with text messages

The solution is quite simple—instead of emailing the customer, send them a text message. Text messages have a 98% open rate and a click-through rate of up to 45%.

Text messages are the best way to recover abandoned carts. You get in touch with the customer directly at almost exactly the same time as they abandon their cart. In just minutes of them leaving your site, you can remind them to finish their order and even offer them an additional discount. And if you send more than just one message you increase your chances of recovering the cart.

CartBoss actually allows you to send multiple different abandoned cart text messages with time delays and discount options. This way you can customize your abandoned cart funnel to optimize your marketing costs.

How to recover carts with text messages?

When somebody is at your checkout page and leaves it without completing the order, the cart is considered abandoned. If the visitor provides at least their phone number in the phone number field, they are eligible to receive abandoned cart text messages.

With CartBoss, recovering abandoned carts with text messages is simple and works out of the box. After registering an account with us, you add the sites for which you would like to send abandoned cart text messages, add the API key and activate the text messages you would like to send. That is it.

We currently support WooCommerce and Shopify integrations and have an SDK in PHP ready for all the custom websites.

You can add custom discounts and set different time delays for each message.

No matter the country where the text is sent, it will automatically be sent in the correct language of the recipient.

When somebody receives the abandoned cart text message and clicks on the link, they are redirected to the same checkout page as before, with all of the data pre-filled. If a discount is added to the message the discount will also be automatically applied.

Abandoned cart text message statistics

At CartBoss, we are proud of the results we have seen so far. If we check only the statistics for the abandoned cart text messages, we have found some amazing results!

Abandoned cart text message ROI

We calculate ROI (Return Of Investment) based on the money spent on sending all the text messages and the revenue generated from the text messages sent from our dashboard.

On average, the ROI for abandoned cart text messages was 2400%, where the lowest was at 700% and the best performing was at 7400%.

Abandoned cart text message CTR

A Click-Through Rate, or CTR, is the ratio between the number of text messages sent and the number of sites visited from the text message link.

In the tests, two text messages were sent: one 15 minutes after the abandonment and the second one 3 hours after the first one. The first message had a CTR between 30% and 50% and the second between 20% and 30%.

Is recovering carts by sending text messages GDPR compliant?

Unfortunately, we have no straightforward answer. It depends on the country where you want to send the text messages to. The plugin has a built-in checkbox where you can get the users’ agreement to receive them. You can change the checkbox’s text as you please so that it fits the country’s legislation.

The Cart Boss service is compliant with the GDPR legislation and shows you the steps you need to follow before implementing text messages into your website.
